Pressure makes it stiff

The suit is pumped full of air at about 4 PSI — like a basketball. That pressure pushes outward against the fabric, so every joint fights back. Closing your hand inside the glove takes ~50 lb of force, like squeezing a tennis ball all day.

Heat has nowhere to go

Your body makes about 600 watts of heat when working hard. In space there's no air, so 300 feet of thin water tubes wrap around your body, soak up the heat, and pump it to a cooler on the backpack.

Micrometeoroids

Specks of dust travel at 16 miles per second — 7× faster than a rifle bullet. The outer shell uses Vectran (5× stronger than Kevlar) so a stray particle doesn't punch through.

Bathroom problems

A spacewalk runs 6 to 8 hours straight with no break. Astronauts wear a NASA-engineered "Maximum Absorbency Garment" — a hi-tech diaper.

Cold fingertips

On Earth's shadow side the suit hits −250°F. Each fingertip has a tiny electric heater built in to stay warm enough to grip tools.

Solar radiation

Solar flares shoot high-speed particles that scramble computer chips and damage human DNA. The suit has shielding sewn between layers to block it.
